WHAT is Rotary Youth Exchange?

  • Rotary Youth Exchange (RYE or YEP) is a Rotary International student exchange program for students in secondary school
  • Since 1929, Rotary International has sent young people around the globe to learn a new language, experience another culture, and truly become global citizens
  • Rotary Youth Exchange promotes peace and builds a stronger world through cultural understanding and develops leadership in youth
  • Exchanges for students ages 15-19 are sponsored by Rotary clubs in more than 100 countries

WHY would a Student do Youth Exchange?

What are the costs?

Rotary is one of the least expensive study abroad programs available for high school students. Many local Rotary clubs sponsor exchange students, helping to dramatically offset expenses and make the exchange more affordable.

Room and board are provided, as well as any school fees. Each program varies, but students are usually responsible for:

  • Round-trip airfare
  • Travel insurance
  • Travel documents (such as passports and visas)
  • Spending money and any additional travel or tours

Is it Safe?

Rotary is one of the safest high school exchange programs in the world.  Students are sponsored by a local Rotary club in the country they visit. The members of the club take great care to ensure the safety of the students. Every student is counseled before leaving on exchange and is required to sign an agreement on avoiding dangerous situations, such as driving, drinking or using drugs.

Rotary International has strict Youth Protection requirements and guidelines for all youth-related programs.  These programs extend globally.  Rotary Exchange monitors situations closely in partner countries. Those countries deemed high risk are removed from the list for exchanges.
